فعل understand به معنای درک کردن تقریبا با دیگر معانی این فعل یکسان است. تنها تفاوت آن، شناخت قبلی از شخصیت و طبیعت یک چیز و یا فرد و نحوه برخورد ( دلسوزانه ) با آن است. مثال زیر به این نکته اشاره می کند:
